Website availability monitoring using UptimeRobot

Introduction

I recently discovered that my web server was down. After contacting the provider, the services were restored, but unfortunately I was unable to record the time the connection was down, as a result of my blog being available to visitors. Of course, any service on this web server is useless, so I decided to look for a free online service to monitor my site. My choice UptimeRobot

UptimeRobot is a popular online service that allows you to monitor the availability of your site, server, or other network resource. It regularly sends requests to the specified resource (for example, every 5 minutes) and records whether the site was available at that moment. In the event of a failure, the service notifies you via email, SMS, or other channels.

UptimeRobot Features

The capabilities are really great, but certain features are available in the paid version. Available functions: HTTP/HTTPS monitoring, Ping Monitor, Port Monitor, Keyword Monitor.

At this stage, I am only interested in HTTP/HTTPS monitoring:

  • Checks if the site is available at the specified URL
  • Determines downtime and uptime
  • Displays server response, error codes, response time

Registration and settings

I liked this service because of the ease of registration and use. Registration is done on the website https://uptimerobot.com/, you just need to click “Register for FREE” and fill out the registration form.

After filling in the data, you will receive an email with a link to activate your account. After activating the account, at the first login, you will be offered to choose the type of monitoring, in which you need to select the first item: HTTP / website monitoring

  • In the “URL to monitor” field, I entered the address of my blog https://ostrich.kyiv.ua/
  • Next, you need to configure the “How will we notify you?” section, I selected the E-mail that I specified during registration

After completing the basic settings, a dashboard will open, on which the newly created record will already be placed.

When you click on this record, extended information about the metric will open.

In this way, you can monitor the uptime of the site, but additional metrics can be activated in a paid tariff plan.

Mobile application

The uptimerobot service also offers a mobile application for Android and IOS. I installed the application for Android via GooglePlay. In order to view statistics, you just need to log in to your account. There will be a green circle on the dashboard that will symbolize the server’s operation, and when you select a site, extended information for the last 24 hours or the last 7 days will be displayed.

Conclusion

UptimeRobot is a simple, convenient and reliable tool for monitoring the availability of your sites. Even in the free version, it provides powerful features that are sufficient for most users. It is an ideal choice for those who want to quickly find out about site failures and be confident in its stability.
